THE TASTY BITS THIS WEEK
Special Feature Story of the Week
-The Timbers took on Real Salt Lake last night and gave the crowd 89 minutes of excitement and pride with Darlington Nagbe scoring Two Goals. Wallace was called with a hand ball in the box early in the match and the RSL converted the PK into a goal. THEN in the last few minutes of the match, fell apart defensively and allowed two goals and lost in front a a very disappointed home crowd. This was a problem the Timbers had last year. Lets hope the coaching staff can get a handle on this.
-Kalif was not able to play due to a pulled groin sustained against the Revolution last week The staff and fans all hope he is back by next week. In addition to Alhassan, defender Hanyer Mosquera is out indefinitely after sustaining a concussion and a fractured eye socket against the Revs. We could have used BOTH of their skills last night!
-Timbers play host to England’s Aston Villa July 24 at Jeld-wen Field. Portland will face the storied Premier League club in a summer friendly. This friendly may or may not be the Exhibition C ticket provided to Season Ticket holders. The decision has not been finalized. That ticket MAY be used for a Lamar Hunt US OPEN cup match.
Each week I check in with Marshall Kirkpatrick for the latest in Tech news and tweets. Whether he is tirelessly building his new project Plexus Engine or continuing his work with Read Write Web, Marshall always has his finger on the crystal ball of whats new in the world of technology. This week I will show you a few things that are inspiring us and we think are totally awesome.
-This week Marshall Points out an awesome Tumblr site put on the web by the Oregonian! EXCELLENT TIME WASTE MANAGEMENT here with a local perspective. Once he tweeted it out, I have been digging through the great pics myself. http://oregonianphoto.tumblr.com/
-I have also notice that he has spent a lot of time utilizing RDIO http://www.rdio.com/#/new/ . I have yet to buy the subscription and really check it out, but will this week!
-I found a great APP this week that enables your iPhone to generate READABLE PDF files. The cost is $3.99 and it is called DocScanner. I will be using this nearly daily at my job for dealing with my receipts in accounting, and sending US Customs Documents to Bonded Warehouses around town. It is so easy to use and COMPLETELY EASY! It makes your photograph perfectly resemble a document by washing out the gray scale, giving it perfect borders and then enabling the documents to be read using the ADOBE OCR Function…oh and did I mention it was practically built to coincide perfectly with dropbox…Very nice DocScanner and Iphone for ending your long feud with Adobe!
SPECIAL SUPPORTLAND TIDBIT
The Simpson’s Opening Theme song was Written by Elfman in 1989 and it is a tune known by everyone…Just whistle the first little bit and those around you will immediately hum along. The Simpsons is the longest-running American sitcom, the longest-running American animated program, and in 2009 it surpassed Gunsmokeas the longest-running American prime-time, scripted television series. WELL, in the show the Simpson’s by Matt Groening, many of the characters and places have familiar sounding names to those who live in Oregon, and even more so, those who live in Portland. THAT is no coincidence! Groening is from Portland, graduating from Lincoln High School in 1972. Here are just a few of the Portland References…The Simpsons live on Evergreen Terrace, the same street on which Groening grew up. Groening used his own family roots names (Homer, Margaret, Lisa and Maggie) that became Simpson names. The former Trojan Nuclear Plant, north of Portland, supposedly inspired Homer’s job. Ned Flanders was named after Flanders Street, Mayor Quimby was named after Quimby street. Bart & Lisa’s elementary school resembles Groening’s childhood school Ainsworth Elementary. Groening chose Springfield for The Simpsons‘ hometown because the Anderson family on Father Knows Best lived in Springfield, which Groening thought was the Springfield that is just down I-5 from Portland. THERE are some who believe that Sideshow Bob Terwilliger shares a name with Terwilliger Boulevard in SW Portland (Groening swears it was unintentional) because he was likely named after an early Dr Seuss Movie THE 5000 FINGERS OF DR T. HOWEVER, Groening has never confirmed ANY of the similarities. I mention this in an earlier post back in January! http://portlandscramble.com/2012/01/29/01-29-12-radiohead-and-cackalacksmovie-madness-combo/. This last February, the 500th episode of the Simpsons was aired, so there have been plenty of opportunities for Groenings Portland roots to shine through whether he admits it or not! Thanks for the Portland Scramble Matt…
