THE TASTY BITS THIS WEEK
Special Feature Story of the Week
-My personal favorite player Kalif Alhassan scored an amazing goal against San Jose in the first game of the mini tournament on Monday night. Our entire section, in 111, have adopted Kalif as our player, because he wears number 11, and after the goal, we went nuts!
-On the same day as being signed, University of Portland products and Timbers under 23 member Ryan Kawulok scored a goal against Chivas on Thursday! He has been around the team as a trialist for a while and the goal couldn’t have been a better way to say I am ready to play for this team! Coach Spencer sees the 22 year old as a big part of the future of this club. There are quite a few proven veterans ahead of him on the defensive line, but a goal speaks pretty loud with 1 week left until the start of the season.
-El Salvador native Steve Purdy was injured during an international friendly in LA on Wednesday. He received 8 stitches below his eye but Timbers officials say he will be alright.
-The game against AIK from Switzerland is today and we are all hoping for a victory! We will see Kris Boyd for the first time, along with our veterans. This will be a closer look to what our starting 11 will look like when the season begins next Monday.
Each week I check in with Marshall Kirkpatrick for the latest in Tech news and tweets. Whether he is tirelessly building his new project Plexus Engine or continuing his work with Read Write Web, Marshall always has his finger on the crystal ball of whats new in the world of technology.
– Marshall wrote and article about A New People Search Engine Called Skills.to
-What I feel is interesting about this search engine is the criteria for what it searches for! It is based on peoples individual skills and expertise in various fields coupled with how others endorse you in these skilled areas. According to Joshua Schachter “the search engine is for people by property of the person.” Marshall also feels that his own Engine, Plexus, is using some of the same ideas searchable in the twitter-scape!
-I spent the afternoon recently with an old friend who has stayed away from the social networking of computers until recently, and his skepticism about the usefulness of computers as a social medium reflected my own feelings just two years ago! But now I see that being found, analyzed and potentially judged by our internet presence is almost unavoidable. I have decided to sculpt my presence on the internet to accurately reflect my values and interests. THAT is one of the reasons I started Portland Scramble!
SPECIAL SUPPORTLAND TIDBIT
The Portland Adult Soapbox Derby Is an annual event on Mt. Tabor that is ingrained in the crazy culture of Portland. This year the Derby is on Saturday August 18 and is always a hugely popular event. The concept is pretty simple! Build a car that gravity propels down the slopes of Mt Tabor. AND build it people do. Some of the true die-hards spend all year refining their chariots in hopes of victory. The Mission of the Derby is stated on the website as “Flexing Portland Creative Muscle Since 1997”, and creative it is! There are two main entry categories, ART and Science. From there, the rest is up to you!
I started making my own beer on January 11th 2004. A friend gave some equipment and a Charlie Papazian Joy of HomeBrewing Book and from there, I paddled my way down a river of beer! I have brewed over 75 batches of beer now and consider it one of my more tasty contributions to friends and family. There are quite a few home-brew shops around Portland, But I find that the service and quality ingredients from Steinbarts Homebrew Supply and Lets Brew to be the best! You can get EVERYTHING you need to brew amazing and delicious beer from either of them. Craigslist is also full of carboys, brew pots, funnels and hoses that work. Just get yourself a copy of the Joy of Home brewing, relax and have a home brew. The Lets Brew location also has the option of letting you brew in their facility eliminating the need to buy all the equipment if you just want to give it a try. Most people who start home brewing and get a few batches to bottle or pint consider themselves a home-brewer for life! DID I mention that beer is allowed at the Soapbox Derby on Mt Tabor? Well, there is no doubt about THIS perfect Portland Scramble!
